Industrial geothermal heat pumps
Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for providing heat in industrial facilities.
They utilize the thermal potential of the ground to heat or cool buildings by converting low-temperature energy stored in the ground into heat.
Geothermal heat pumps – types of systems
There are several types of industrial geothermal heat pumps, which differ in the way they extract heat from the ground and use it later. The three main types of ground source heat pumps are groundwater, ground-to-air, and ground-to-soil.
Groundwater geothermal heat pumps:
This system uses the heat stored in groundwater to heat or cool rooms. The heat exchanger is located in the ground, where the temperature is kept stable all year round by the earth’s heat. The water circulates through the heat exchanger, transferring its energy to the heat pump, which then uses it to heat or cool the premises. After passing through the heat exchanger, the water is returned to the ground. Such systems are ideal for regions with a high groundwater table.
Ground-to-air geothermal heat pumps:
These systems extract heat from the ground and transfer it to the air through a ventilation system. The heat exchanger is located underground, and the air circulates through the ventilation system, warming or cooling depending on the season. Ground-to-air geothermal heat pumps work effectively in regions with a temperate climate.
Ground-source geothermal heat pumps:
These systems use two heat exchangers located in the ground at different depths. One of them is used to extract heat from the ground, and the other is used to remove it. This ensures more stable operation of the system in conditions of variable ambient temperatures.
Industrial geothermal heat pumps are an innovative solution for providing heating and cooling in industrial facilities. The choice of a particular type of pump depends on local climatic conditions, groundwater availability and facility requirements. However, all of them are highly energy efficient and can significantly reduce the environmental impact.
